What Is an Internet Speed Test?

An internet speed test measures the performance of a network connection by testing latency, download speed and upload speed. These measurements can help you understand how your connection performs from your current device and network.

ALVIX Speed Test runs directly in your browser without requiring a separate application. Click Start Speed Test to measure your connection.

What Do Ping, Download and Upload Mean?

  • Ping: measures the approximate round-trip response time between your browser and the test server. Lower latency is generally better for interactive applications.
  • Download speed: measures how quickly data can be transferred from the test server to your device. It is commonly displayed in Mbps.
  • Upload speed: measures how quickly data can be transferred from your device to the test server.

What Is Mbps?

Mbps means megabits per second. It is a common unit used to describe internet connection speed.

Mbps is different from MB/s, which means megabytes per second. One byte contains eight bits, so the numerical value of a transfer rate changes depending on which unit is being used.

Why Can Speed Test Results Change?

Internet speed can vary depending on network congestion, Wi-Fi signal quality, the device being used, the connection between your network and the test server, and other network conditions.

For a more consistent comparison, run tests under similar conditions and avoid heavy downloads, uploads or other bandwidth-intensive activity during the test.

Internet Speed Test FAQ

How do I test my internet speed?

Click the Start Speed Test button above. ALVIX measures ping, download speed and upload speed directly from your browser.

What is a good ping?

Lower ping generally means lower network latency. What is considered good depends on the application, network path and distance to the destination server.

Why is my Wi-Fi speed lower than expected?

Wi-Fi performance can be affected by signal strength, interference, distance from the access point, wireless congestion and device capabilities.

Does a speed test use internet data?

Yes. A speed test transfers data between your browser and the test server, so running a test consumes some of your available bandwidth.

Why are my download and upload speeds different?

Many internet connections are designed with different download and upload capacities. Network conditions and service configuration can also affect the measured results.
